Roots, Stories

This is the first project where I was able to tell a personal story, a story of first-generation Chinese-American identity. Although there are many similar experiences and challenges that Chinese immigrants face, it was interesting for me to learn about how much a different childhood can shape one’s confidence in his/her identity. Furthermore, I’ve never talked to my mother about her thoughts and struggles as an immigrant who moved here at the “golden age”, as she calls it. Talking to her about her identity explained a lot about why we do things a certain way, that we’re not really “traditional” Chinese nor American.
